Winter is over and it is time to for spring cleaning tips. One of the first things that come to mind when thinking of spring is the inevitable spring cleaning. It is time to go through your home top to bottom and get it clean and organized for the summer months ahead. So where do you start, and how do you stay on track? I have some tips to help you with those questions.
The first thing to do is to make a plan. You can make your own room-by-room list, or you can print free spring cleaning checklists off of multiple websites. Either way, a plan is a must-have before you get started. Another great tip is to go room-by-room, completing one before you move onto the next one. You should also only make one list at a time. You don’t want to get overwhelmed before you even start!
As you go through your rooms, start purging. Make piles for items to keep, give away, and another to discard. Stick to it when it is time to get rid of it. If you haven’t used it in 6 months, it is time for that item to move on. You can donate items, or try to sell them. Just remember that if you try to sell them, they will still be in your house, and in the way.
Get your family involved. Everybody in your family probably uses the same rooms you are working to get in tip-top shape. They should help to make this happen. Offer incentives, allowance, or surprises to get them to pitch in. It is good to get your kids in the habit of helping out, and getting rid of things they no longer use at an early age. Just imagine how nice it will be for everybody once the home is clean and decluttered!
Keeping your home in the same condition as it is right after spring cleaning is the really hard part. Start a cleaning checklist that works for everybody. Maybe include a rotating cleaning chart where every other week 3 different rooms get thoroughly cleaned. Also, don’t fill the voids that you made by purging. Make a rule that if something new comes into the house, something old has to leave.
