Critical Things You Must Do When You Move With Pets

Things You Must know When You Move With Pets

Moving to a new home can be a stressful experience for everyone involved – especially for our furry friends. If you need to move with pets, you certainly want to make it low stress for them. When animals are scared or feeling unsafe, they don’t understand what’s happening. That’s why it’s important to care for them and help them get comfortable.

Dogs, cats, and other pets may become anxious or frightened during the move. This can make the process even more challenging for you because you already have a hundred things to do. If you prepare ahead of time, though, your furry friends will settle into their new home faster. Here are three tips to make the transition as smooth as possible for both you and your pets.

Also, be sure to get our FREE guide. It’s called: Pet Owners – Tips to Making Your Move Easier on Your Pets. It will give you more info to help you and your animals feel prepared.

Tip #1: Get Your Pets Accustomed to Their Carrier

Getting your pets comfortable with their carrier is an essential step in preparing for a move. This will help them feel more secure and less anxious during transport. If they already sleep or hang out in their crate, it will be even easier! But if they’re unfamiliar, here’s what to do.

Introduce the carrier gradually. Place it in a room where your pet spends a lot of time and leave the door open. Encourage your pet to explore the carrier on their own by placing treats or toys inside.

Make the carrier a comfortable place. Line it with a soft blanket or towel and add a few of your pet’s favorite toys. This will help them feel more at ease when they are inside. Next, reward your pet with treats or toys when they go into the carrier on their own. This positive reinforcement will help them associate the carrier with good things.

Tip #2: Make Sure Your Pets are Up-to-Date on Their Shot Records

Having updated shot records is important for travel, especially if you’re moving to a new state. Make sure you have copies of your pet’s shot records and that they are up-to-date. Typically, pets will need proof of vaccinations for rabies, distemper, and bordetella. It’s best to check with your veterinarian to see what records are required and when they should be updated.

Tip #3: Let Them Get Involved in the Moving Process

One way to help pets reduce their anxiety around a new home is to help them get acclimated. Let them play with boxes as you pack. If you’re able to visit the new home before you move, bring them along. Let your animals explore the new space and get familiar with their new home.

You can also make sure they’re getting lots of exercise and special attention. When everything is getting upturned, pets can feel stress and chaos. You can keep them calm by giving them attention and reassuring them.

You can even bring some of their toys to the new house and let them settle in before the big day.
