Supreme Court Ends Eviction Moratorium

Supreme Court Ends Eviction Moratorium.pngIn a 6-3 decision late Thursday, the U.S. Supreme Court ended the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s eviction moratorium. The move brings relief to the country’s small housing providers, who have faced financial hardship for more than a year.

In a statement sent to all members overnight, the National Association of REALTORS® said, “This decision is the correct one, from both a legal standpoint and a matter of fairness. It brings to an end an unlawful policy that places financial hardship solely on the shoulders of mom-and-pop housing providers, who provide nearly half of all rental housing in America, and it restores property rights in America.”

The case was brought by the Georgia and Alabama associations of REALTORS® with help from NAR.

NAR says it will continue to work to speed the flow of rental assistance funds made available to states through two COVID-19 relief bills.

REALTORS® should be aware that some states and localities still have their own eviction moratoria in place. NAR is regularly updating its list of those actions.
