Nye County Asks State Officials to Reopen Liquor Businesses

Nye County Liquor.jpgCounty officials in Nevada have asked the state’s coronavirus task force for approval to reopen all liquor establishments in Nye County as the state witnesses a downward trend of confirmed COVID-19 cases.

Nye County officials said that bars, pubs, taverns, breweries, distilleries and wineries should be able to open since “there have been no COVID cases” attributed to these establishments, the request said.

“Currently there is no ICU or Med-Surg beds occupied by COVID patients and the hospital remains at approximately 65-70% capacity,” county officials said in the request.

County Manager Tim Sutton sent the jurisdictional assessment and action plan Wednesday to the Nevada COVID-19 Mitigation and Management Task Force, also arguing that people are struggling because of the economic downfall caused by the pandemic.

“While COVID’s health impacts need to be recognized and mitigated, the devastating economic effects of the pandemic must also be acknowledged and addressed,” county officials said.

The request also mentioned that there was little justification for having bars that serve food and alcohol open while liquor-only establishments stay closed.

The task force is scheduled to meet Thursday.
