Las Vegas’ New Raiders Stadium Looks Wild and Imposing All Lit Up

When the NFL season eventually kicks off, pandemic permitting, the Raiders will play in their new home at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.  For the better part of last year, construction has been underway on their new stadium, which looks to be a massive upgrade from the dumpy Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.

Even in the middle of a pandemic, construction on the venue has continued with Raiders owner and managing general partner Mark Davis pledging $1 million to fight the coronavirus in Las Vegas. The stadium is expected to cost about $1.9 billion to build, with the Raiders putting up $1.1 billion and public funding of about $750 million making up the rest.

As building has progressed, videos have shown the monolithic arena taking shape and while it looks super cool, NFL fans have had some fun tossing out nicknames.  The big, obsidian sphere has been called everything from a Roomba to a hockey puck to the Death Star.

It looks like construction on the stadium is nearing completion and a recent test of its outside lights showed just how awesome its going to look.

Fans have fondly been referring to it as the Death Star, but that looks way too cool to be the Empire’s command center.  The sleek outside lighting looks like something from a Tron simulation.

Also, just look at the scale of this 65,000-seat behemoth in relation to the rest of the Vegas strip.  It’s massive.

On second thought, maybe it is the Death Star.  Big, black and about to swallow everything in its path.  Either way, it’s poised to be one of the best new stadiums in the league, if and when the NFL comes back.
